Pupil Parliament
At Broom Valley Community School, every child attending school full time gets the opportunity to represent their class on our Pupil Parliament, should they wish to do so. Children are encouraged to stand for election, to tell their classmates why they would be a good Member of Pupil Parliament and what they would try to do if elected. The classes then hold a secret ballot and two representatives from each class are elected.
Pupil Parliament meets monthly on the second Thursday of each month, or the nearest available Thursday if school is closed that day. This enables any pertinent issues raised to be taken to the Governors meeting the following week. At the first Pupil Parliament meeting of the school year, MPPs vote for a Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.
So far this school year, MPPs have talked about how MPPs should behave, not only during meetings but at all times; they have discussed charities and decided which charity should benefit from the profits from the Farmer’s Market held in school; they have told staff what after school clubs they would like and fed back to subject leaders about ICT, Music and Growth Mindset – what they enjoy about each subject and what they don’t enjoy so much. In future meetings MPPs will be giving their opinions on behaviour in school; on how they feel marking and feedback works for them; on lunchtimes, in both dinner halls and out on the playground and on Sports Day, as well as discussing how to best raise money for Comic Relief in March and reviewing the school year in July, saying what they think went well and what they think could be improved.
